Cold War "Crazies"

After reading about McCarthyism in class, seeing anti-communist propaganda, and reading about the money poured into Europe in an attempt to keep them from falling to communism, what strikes you as the most absurd?  Why do you think America was this concerned about communism?  Does America have a new concern now--if so, what do you think would ever drive us to this point of heightened anxiety again?
